2019 has not been a great year for movies. The box office has not been out of the roof except juggernaut Avengers EndGame, Captain Marvel, Shazam and John Wick. 2019 has been an emotional year for movie and television fans. The end of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Big Bang’ Theory was a huge emotional moment for TV fans. Avengers EndGame broke a lot of hearts with it’s powerful ending. Toy Story franchise is coming to an end along with Skywalker saga. It will be a hell of an year for Geek culture and comic book movie fans.
Game of Thrones is probably the most popular television series of all time. The eight and final season of Game of Thrones was very hyped but could not live the expectation. The series started in 2011, however feels a long time ago. The series kick started with the bang and was the most popular TV franchise of all time. The George R.R Martin based TV fantasy series attracted record number of viewership, fan base and was critically acclaimed for its scope, story telling, visual effect and production value.
The show has received 47 Prime time Emmy Awards, the most by any drama series. Personally the final season for Game of Thrones felt pretty rushed. The final season promised so much with excellent performance and stunning visual effect however felt flat on story telling. Despite the average final season, the show will write it’s name on the history book. The end of Game of Thrones feels like an end of an era. HBO will have a hard time keeping their audience on their belt.
Beside Game of Thrones, the story arc of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers ended in Avengers EndGame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with the release of Iron Man in 2008. The journey from Iron Man to Avengers EndGame has been satisfying, emotional, nerve wrecking and importantly phenomenal. The incredible roster created by Kevin Feige and others is probably never going to be repeated. The devastating ending of Avengers EndGame is probably one of the boldest ending in commercial movie.
Robert Downey Jr kick started the whole cinematic universe in 2008. Tony Stark has been the heart of the MCU. The character arc of Tony Stark has been evolved from movies to movies. The death of Tony Stark in Avengers EndGame is heartbreaking and tear jerking. The movie concludes the perfect story arc of Tony but he didn’t deserve to die. He had a lovely family. Morgan deserved better than what she got. In addition to Tony Stark, the movie ended the story arc of Captain America. Steve went back in time and lived happily with Peggy handing the shield to Falcon. Black Widow died in EndGame but we know she has a new movie coming out.
The death of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in MCU feels like an end of an era. The two characters have been the heart and soul of the MCU and a big box office bringer. Fans are a excited to know what comes beyond Avengers EndGame however some are little nervous as well. I still can’t believe they killed Tony Stark. I feel a part of my life has gone missing after the nerve wrecking ending of Avengers EndGame.
Game of Thrones and Avengers EndGame are not only the ones that ending in 2019. The longest running sitcom on television history Big Bang Theory concluded as well. The comedy show started back in 2007 and concluded in May of 2019 with 279 episode and 12 season. Despite receiving mixed review for first season, the show started to grow among the audience. The second and third season were the best among all seasons. The rest is history.
Big Bang Theory has won 56 awards from 216 nominations. Jim Parsons who played Sheldon Cooper won Golden Globe for best Actor in Television in 2011 and four Emmy for best actor. The season finally ended on a positive note with Sheldon and Amy wining Nobel Prize and Penny being pregnant. The end of the show was an emotional moment for comedy lovers and geeks.
Star Wars is probably the biggest franchise in United States. The franchise started way earlier in 1977. The franchise has grown exponentially since the beginning both positively and negatively. The prequel have not been the best others have been amazing. The Empire Strike Back is probably one of my favorite movie of all time. Star wars took a long break before returning in 2015 with The Force Awakens. The movie became the third movie to join the two billion dollar along with Avatar and Titanic.
The Skywalker saga continued with The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi divided the Star Wars fandom. The movie received positive review from the critics but was not well received by the fans. The story of the movie felt a little less ambitious. Solo A Star Wars came and went. The movie received negative review from the critics and tanked at the box office. Fans never wanted a Han Solo movie without Harrison Ford. The Rise of Skywalker is going to be final installment in Skywalker saga. J.J Abraham is back to direct the movie and Billy Dee Williams is returning as Lando and Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine. Disney is taking a few years break from Star Wars movie. The excitement is growing rapidly so is the nervousness.
Apart from Avengers EndGame, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory and Skywalker Saga, Toy Story franchise is coming to an end. We all thought the franchise ended with Toy Story 3 but they are making another one. According to Tom Hanks, the movie is going to be emotional and heartbreaking as well.
I am a huge Marvel Cinematic Universe fan. John Favreau started the cinematic universe, josh Whedon laid the foundation for the bigger picture and Russo brothers carried the legacy. Russo Brothers have grown as a filmmaker from Political thriller Winter Soldier to epic Avengers EndGame. After Avengers EndGame Russo Brothers are taking a break from Marvel for some time. They had a big impact in MCU more than anyone. So losing Russo along with Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans makes me very sad and nervous for the future of MCU. 2019 really feels an end of an era with Game of Thrones coming to an end, OG Avengers retiring, end of my favorite sitcom Big Bang Theory and Skywalker saga.
