Godzilla King of monster underperforms at the box office

Godzilla King of the monster is the third installment in Godzilla franchise after 2014 Godzilla and Kong Skull Island. The highly anticipated movie took the number one spot at the box office but slightly underperformed. The movie opened with 49 million in the domestic market along with 130 million on the international market. The movie was very important for the future of monster verse and Godzilla vs Kong. The trailers for King of Monsters were received positively and the marketing was brilliant. Despite studio hard work on marketing, the movie could not bring enough audience in the theater.

The movie currently holds 39 percent in Rotten tomato. The movie received mixed review from the critics, with praise of action sequences, visual effects, score but criticized on story telling and human character development. However, the movie has received support from the regular movie goers. The movie received B+ cinema score and 86 % on audience score on rotten tomato.

Godzilla King of the Monsters fell behind its predecessors Godzilla and Kong Skull Island. Godzilla opened with 93 million dollar and ended up making 529.1 million dollar worldwide. Kong Skull Island opened with 61 million and ended up making 566 million dollar worldwide. Kong Skull island was positively received and the star power of Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel Jackson.

Godzilla King of the Monsters has some problems. The movie is brilliant when the movie focuses on Monsters but falls flat on the human scene. The character development is just awful. Another reason why Godzilla King of Monsters underperformed at the box office is because of a lack of star power. Yes, Star power does not automatically guarantee box office success but helps to create online chatter. Millie Bobby Brown and Vera Farmiga are very respected actor but lack fanbase. There are no huge stars to boost its box office number in the international market. The movie lack diversity as well. More than 70 % of moviegoers were male. Despite getting a positive review from the audience, mainstream moviegoers are not interested in the movie.

Another reason why the King of Monster underperformed at the box office might be the dominance of Disney in the movie market. Aladdin brought 42 .3 million on its second weekend and is still going strong. Avengers EndGame brought 7.8 million dropping 55 % percent from its previous weekend. Taron Egerton’s Rocketman opened with 25 million and John Wick 3 is still going strong at the box office.

Godzilla King of the monster has grossed 179 million worldwide on its opening weekend. The box office number might be a little concern for WB but they would like to comeback strongly with Godzilla vs Kong on March 13, 2020.
