Marvel movies have always been big at the Chinese box office. The latest installment in MCU has been just magical at the Chinese box office. Avengers Endgame earned 614 million dollars in China alone. The movie was the biggest opening weekend in China bringing 331 million dollars in just five days. Infinity War grossed 359 million in China alone. The number might not be as big as Endgame but it was a staggering achievement. Captain Marvel opened with 86 million on its opening weekend in China and concluded its box office with 154 million dollars. Thor Ragnarok, Guardian movies were also big at the Chinese box office. Shang-Chi was born in the Honan province of the People’s Republic of China and is the son of Fu Manchu, the Chinese mastermind who has repeatedly attempted world conquest and had a thirst for blood. Chinese moviegoers are loving comic book movies and if you release a movie with a Chinese character in lead role than there is no reason to doubt Shang-Chi won’t be a huge blockbuster.

Diversity has always been a topic of discussion in Hollywood. Black Panther was the first black cast superhero movie that got recognization at the academy. Recently Captain Marvel was marketed as the first female-led Marvel movie. Both Black Panther and Captain Marvel managed to join the billion-dollar club. Yes, both of them were riding on the wave of Avengers, but the diversity factor manages to pull online conversation. No Asian character has played a significant role in a title movie. Claudia Kim as Dr. Helen Cho in the Age of Ultron was only an Asian actor who got some spotlight. Handling the Shield to Sam rather than Bucky, Valkyrie being the new leader of Asgard, Marvel is focusing on diversity but still has some tough roads ahead. Feige already has plans for the character. It’s about time when Feige makes his move. We still don’t have any confirmation on the Phase 4 movies. Disney might be planning to release Phase 4 movies on D23 this year. Shan-Chi is already on a priority list for Disney, Marvel, and Kevin Feige.
