Marvel is moving in the right direction with Diversity and Inclusivity

Marvel Cinematic Universe has been phenomenal since 2008. The humongous success of Avengers Endgame pushed the franchise above 22 billion dollars. Marvel is re-releasing Avengers Endgame to push it ahead of Avatar. The brilliant storytelling and excellent character development have been a major recipe for Marvel Studio success. Marvel is moving in the right direction with diversity and inclusivity in Phase 3 and beyond.

There has always been some conversation on Diversity in Hollywood. The massive success of movies comes from excellent casting along with some exceptional choices in Diversity and inclusivity. Marvel Studio has always been very good at adding diverse cast. Don Cheadle and Anthony Mackie have played key roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Panther was the first Marvel movie with a black lead.

Black Panther was a huge hit at the box office. The movie went on to make 1.34 billion dollars worldwide. Chadwick Boseman was fantastic as Black Panther but Michael B. Jordan stole the show. Marvel Studio got a huge boost from its marketing as the first black-led Marvel movie. The success of Black Panther encouraged Marvel to add more diverse characters in their movies. The movie was the first comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture.

Marvel Studio first Female-led superhero movie came in 2018 with Captain Marvel. The first female member of Avengers was Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson. She was first introduced in John Favreau’s Iron Man 2. She might not have been as powerful as other characters but she has played a key role in moving the story forward. It took 12 years for Marvel to get a good story for Black Widow movie. The movie is currently in pre-production and is expected to hit theaters in Summer 2020.

There have always been strong female characters in Marvel movies. Pepper Pots, Jane Foster, Peggy Carter, Maria Hill and Ancient One have been great in MCU movies. However, Neither of them got a solo movie. The success of Wonder Women encouraged Feige to make a female-led movie. The initial idea was to introduce Captain Marvel in the Age of Ultron but Joss Whedon went with Scarlet Witch.

Brie Larson did a pretty decent job as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. I felt the character was written very poorly. Despite being an average movie, Captain Marvel grossed 1.12 billion dollars worldwide. A big chunk of money came from Avengers Endgame hype. The online chatter on Captain Marvel was very massive both positively and negatively.

Avengers Endgame concluded the storyline that began with Iron Man back in 2008. The ending of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark was perfectly poetic. However, Marvel needs to move forward without Cap and Tony. We will definitely get a new team for Avengers 5. Marvel made some excellent choices in terms of diversity in Avengers Endgame.

Avengers Endgame introduced the first gay character in Marvel Cinematic Universe played by Joe Russo. The movie didn’t stretch out the moment but gave a little hint of what lies beyond. Tessa Thompson and Brie Larson have hinted some romance coming pretty soon but no official confirmation has been made. There have been some rumors of introducing a gay character in the upcoming Eternals movie.

Captain Marvel was Ace in the hole for Avengers in Endgame. I loved Carol in Endgame more than in Captain Marvel. Russo brothers used the character perfectly without overdoing anything. Perhaps Kevin Feige will get a new team Captain Marvel 2. Feige has repeatedly told Captain Marvel will be the new face of MCU.

Nebula was a standout for me in Avengers Endgame. I was not a huge fan of the character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 but Avengers Infinity War and Endgame made her one of my favorite. Karen Gillan will reprise her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. It’s always nice to have a strong female character around.

The A-force scene in Avengers Endgame was just beautiful. Some people might find the scene forced but it was just magical for women. Little girls and women were cheering and clapping during the scene in my theaters. There have been some discussions of the A-Force movie but there has not been an official confirmation. Birds of Prey is coming pretty soon. So Feige would love to observe the movie and take necessary step for A-Force.

Apart from A-force, Marvel is very keen on making a Shang Chi movie. Marvel movies have been making a huge amount of money in China. People in China are loving comic book movies and wouldn’t it be great if Marvel makes a comic book movie with a Chinese lead. Sarah Finn is working very hard to find the right actor for the job.

There is both excitement and nervousness among fans for Phase 4. Nothing has gone wrong for Marvel till now. Marvel would love to continue the track record and keep going strong. Looking into Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and Avengers Endgame, Marvel might be moving in the right direction in terms of Diversity and Inclusivity.
