2019 has been the biggest year for Marvel. Avengers EndGame became the highest-grossing movie of all time, Captain Marvel became the first female-led superhero movie to join the billion-dollar club and Far From Home became the first Spider-Man movie to join the billion-dollar club. The success of Captain Marvel was vital for Marvel. However, to repeat the success again Marvel needs to search a new director for its sequel.
First of all, why don’t we appreciate Captain Marvel success and point out some flaws? The first Female-led Marvel movie made over a billion-dollar at the box office. The success of Captain Marvel was encouraging for not only females but also movie studio. Despite a few people’s desperate efforts to shit on Captain Marvel, Carol was able to rise up. I think the negatively played a key role in uplifting Captain Marvel’s box office.
The marketing campaign for Captain Marvel was not groundbreaking. The trailers were just above average and fans were not intimidated with the character. I was also not very skeptical of the movie because of its weak marketing campaign but I never doubted Kevin Feige and Marvel. However, there were many factors favoring Captain Marvel.
Avengers Infinity War and Endgame were doing the heavy lifting for Captain Marvel rather than its own marketing campaign. The credit scene of Infinity War enticed fans to watch Captain Marvel before Avengers Endgame. Kevin Feige was keen on making Captain Marvel the new face in MCU. He was time and again mentioning Captain Marvel as the most powerful Avengers.
When I think of Captain Marvel’s box office, most of the money came from Avengers. That’s the thing Captain Marvel 2 will lack. I don’t think Brie Larson is enough to pull more audience back at movie theaters. If not for Avengers, I think the movie would have a hard time touching the 800 million dollar mark.
Let’s talk about Captain Marvel in Avengers Endgame. Russo brothers perfectly handled the character. She had limited screen time but Russo brothers gave her moments to shine. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck lacked something very precious. I know they are not as experienced as Russo brothers but the bar for Marvel is set very high.
Now, back to Captain Marvel. The movie was not the top tier movie but was also not the worst. The movie had some great moments but there was something Marvel was just trying to get away from it. The editing in some scenes was choppy and action sequences were also not praiseworthy.
Another thing I noticed in Captain Marvel was Brie Larson performance. We all know she is an academy award-winning actress. Larson was fantastic in the emotional scene but she didn’t look quite convincing while delivering funny lines. She was trying so hard to replicate Robert Downey Jr.
The script, direction, and story did no justice to Brie Larson talent and character. Carol Danvers lacked vulnerability in Captain Marvel. If the character arc continues to be same then Carol will face a similar fate as Superman. Captain Marvel 2 needs a new director and team to repeat its success.
